Training Gear

January and February prove to be some of the coldest months. To fight the elements, I wanted a jacket that would:

A) Be multifunctional. Sufficient for simply running errands and strong enough to hold up on a hike.
B) Be lightweight. No bulky jackets that are annoying to schlep around.
C) Be form fitting. I don’t want to look like the kid from “A Christmas Story.”

I’m not picky, wink wink.

I settled on the Patagonia Nano Puff® Jacket. It feels like a sleeping bag and weighs as much as a feather.

From Patagonia: Windproof and water-resistant, the full-zip Nano Puff® Jacket is made with warm, incredibly lightweight, highly compressible PrimaLoft® One insulation. Ideal as an insulating layer or outerwear in cold climates.

Wind AND water-resistant are a huge plus. I can put on a t-shirt under the jacket and be fine in 40+ degrees. Your body heats up quite nicely under the insulation. When I’m hiking and it’s a bit cooler, I throw on a simple base layer and I’m set. The jacket also folds up into itself, which is ideal for taking it with you wherever you go.

In truth, the hus actually found this jacket and went on and on about how warm and light it was, so naturally Santa got the hint. Yes, we have matching jackets. But they are different colors:)

What jacket do you bundle up in? Are you a fan of a hoody on a jackets or do you go sans hood?

Last week we looked at the best gift ideas for runners starting with the newbies, and this week I’m sharing the gifts for the more advanced runner in your life.

“If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.” ― John Bingham

- Garmin Forerunner: Looking to be more effective when conditioning? Garmin Forerunner is by far the best investment I have ever made. I have an older model but the 305 and 405 series are fantastic. With Garmin, no more guessing your time or pace. Garmin has helped me train and improve my pace, time and time again. If you have thought about getting one of these, now is the time. Buy one.
- Running Socks: In a battle of which came first, the sock or the shoe, it’s a tough debate. Runner’s feet can take a serious beating and it’s important your socks protect your tootsies. Thorlo makes a terrific compression sock to keep your feet dry and blister free. Be mindful that you will want a different sock for the winter and summer months.
- Hydration Belt: If you have plans of running more than 6 miles then you know staying hydrated is critical for your performance. Unless your friends are willing to set up water stations for you, a FuelBelt is ideal for not weighing you down on your run. Personally, I like minimalist fuel belts; nothing on my back or in my hands.
- Yankz: No more stopping mid-race to tie a shoe. The Yankz Sure Lace system is made of expandable cords which fit to your foot and don’t move during your runs. I put in Yankz once before a race and never had to tie my shoe again, until I bought a new pair.
- Nike Element Half Zip: The elements are tricky and having this hoodie in your arsenal is a good way to make sure you don’t miss out on any fair weather runs. When I am not sure about the temp, I can typically run in this top with a sports bra underneath. Lightweight and comfy, not too toasty.

What other running goodies are on your list?

Happy holidays! With only 24 more shopping days til Christmas it’s time to talk gift giving. I am going to breakdown the best gift ideas for runners starting with the newbies, and each week leading up to Christmas I’ll share gifts for advanced runners and multi-sport athletes. We’ll make sure your list covers the range of runners and athletes in your life.

Thinking about running? Just started running? We welcome you to the running community with open feet arms. If you have a pair of “good” sneakers you are set, but let’s make sure you are starting off on the right foot.

- Gift certificate to a speciality running store: Showing a newbie a speciality running store should wet their athletic appetite. This is not a Dick’s or Sports Authority. Introduce a newbie to a custom shoe demo to pick out the perfect pair of kicks. It’s important that everyone starts running with the right shoe.
- Lululemon Swiftly Tech Long Sleeve: Running is always fun when you look the part. Get rid of the cotton tees! Look for fabrics that are moisture wicking and breathable. This toasty top is great for the winter and spring seasons. Lululemon products have such a unique fit that you will certainly feel the difference while working out. I have been eyeing this for over a year, and it just might make my Christmas wish list as well.
- iPod Shuffle: Time to ditch a bulky music device, even if you’re running with your iPhone on an armband pouch. This tiny MP3 will not distract you during your run. Allowing you to move freely to your favorite tunes.
- Running Books: It’s always helpful for someone to read up about the ins and outs of being a successful runner. I personally have read and enjoy Chris Carmichael’s Food for Fitness and Runner’s World Complete Book of Women’s Running by Dagny Scott Barrios. Best advice often comes from the pros.
- Watch Out: You are looking for a watch that is water-resistant, has a stopwatch, and an electroluminescent backlight. No need for anything fancy, but grab a sports watch such as this one from Timex to help keep track of your time. If you are serious about becoming dedicated to running then I would absolutely invest in a Garmin Forerunner.

When my mom started running, I learned a few tricks on how to break beginners into running slowly. Those that have been running for a bit know we take some things for granted, but everyone is a runner no matter how many steps they have taken. Don’t wait to feel motivated, get started and your motivation will come.

What other running must haves would you include?
