Dear Gym: It’s Not You, It’s Me

I’ve been an avid gym member for years, but as of yesterday our membership has expired. I am a bit in shock, because typically it’s a no-brainer to renew. I broke-up with the gym.

Although I am 8 months prego, I still love my gym classes and we go at least 4 times a week. Seeing as though once the bambino comes I’ll be out of the gym for at least two months, we felt it didn’t make since to sign-up again.

Now I’m faced with how to keep up with my workouts during a period in which I seriously am conscious of my fitness routine.

When in doubt, I “list it” out:
Pros
- I am forced to think outside the box and try new things!
- We are finally investing in a cycling trainer since we don’t have a monthly gym fee to pay.
- I’ve considered joining smaller running clubs and yoga groups that are much more economical.

Cons
- It’s getting darker earlier and I’m running out of safely lit paths.
- Weather is unpredictable and can be cold this time of year.
- My routine is flipped upside down.

Since breaking up is hard to do, I’ll take any words of encouragement you have to keep my mind off missing the gym.

  1. I don’t blame you. I get a gym membership through my husbands employer and I never use it! We bought a pretty nice gym/weights set off craigslist for dirt cheap. Add that to running and I am all set. I hear you on the running at night thing though. It does get a little scary. I limit my night time running to my neighborhood and won’t venture too far.

  2. It’ll be a nice change of pace. When I moved a couple/few years ago, it took me 8 months to find a gym. I was worried I’d get soft or something without one, but it actually just gave me a chance to challenge my muscles in different ways. I became very close friends with my resistance bands. :)

  3. I break up with my gym at least once a year, and it can be invigorating!
    I totally agree with your pro list. Exciting about getting a bike trainer, and this way you can think outside the box. By the way, I love that you’re still going that often with your little belly!
    We’ve bought a few weights each year, and for our anniversary last year got a small weight machine. I now love working out at home and only use the gym to swim….if only we could get our own pool!

  4. Is there a Lululemon by you? The showroom here offers a free class every Saturday morning and does a run club. I’m still paying for a gym membership that I really only use to take spin classes, but I think it might be more useful in the winter.

    • Gym in the winter is such a lifesaver, more for convenience as well. Good suggestion on Lululemon – love their classes. They just moved the one closest to me, very disappointed.

  5. That’s a tough one. But it seems like you have some decent alternatives and just need to add a few dvds to the collection? It’ll keep you entertained once you have a new schedule worked out after the lil’ one gets here.

    • My mom is a DVD fanatic but I did not get that gene. Ms Uncoordinated over here. You’re right, I should think of a new schedule since the bambino is totally going to rock my daily routine.

  6. I haven’t had a gym membership in years…I guess my love for running gives me enough exercise that I find the gym a waste of my $$$…You’ll be able to make it through and little baby will enjoy whatever “ride” you take him on ;)

    • I love my running, but my bladder doesn’t make it as long as it use to. Sorry for the overshare, lol. My mom doesn’t have a gym, just like you – runs all the time.

  7. I recently quit my gym in lieu of attending a yoga studio more often. I’m absolutely loving it! It has been a transition though – I’ve been running outdoors, so I am worried about the weather coming up. It will be a fun challenge though. One place to look is on your phone/iPod for exercise apps. If you have an iPhone, I highly recommend Nike Training Club. Lots of routines, most you can do at home with a small amount of equipment (dumbbells, medicine ball, etc.).

    • Apps are an awesome suggestion. And Nike Women often post some good things. Great recs. And I actually started looking at classes around town you can join/pop-in for one-offs.

  8. Embrace creativity and fun new workouts! I think that babe of yours will help keep you busy and not even thinking of the gym;-)

    And the best part is, when you are ready, the gym will be right there waiting for you with open arms!

  9. Agree with Amanda….and yes breastfeeding burns tons o calories, right? It’s a nice option to have the gym membership but definitely not the only way to stay active! Lots of creative things to do outside of the gym…and enjoy the break post pregnancy! You will be back at it soon enough :-)

  11. The cycling trainers aren’t too expensive! Use Craigs List (or the UK non-creeper equivalent of) and you should find some used ones for a really reasonable price (we bought ours for $50 or so a few years ago, works like a charm).

    Other tips: Podcasts & YouTube for fitness and/or yoga classes. You’d be surprised what you can find there…
    And running groups! Lots of those. ;)

  12. I exchanged my 1-year membership for a Norditrack treadmill, and love the convenience of being able to jump on it whenever I have the time, not worrying about driving, the kids, the weather or lighting ;)
