Garmin Forerunner: The foremost piece of gear

Indy's pace was not his best PR.

I have a new bestie to run with me! Get a load of this beaut. After much research and debate, we made a big purchase. The Garmin Forerunner 305 is the newest edition to the fam. It looks like the watch version of Zach Morris’ old cell phone. It’s a honker. This little arm candy is a laptop to-go, complete with heartrate monitor and GPS. Indy was clocking some serious speed during our evening walk. No more guessing on my runs, and it’s perfect for biking too. I’ll have a more in-depth review once I break this puppy in.

From the pros over at Garmin: Form meets function with Garmin’s high-performance line of personal trainers — the Forerunner 305, 405 and 205. The Forerunner 305 includes a high sensitivity GPS receiver, new courses feature and robust wireless heart rate monitor for optimal performance.

Everything but the kitchen sink.

Tri Training Tips & Tricks: Don’t guestimate on your moves. I realized I was too much of an “on a whim” workout gal. I said, “OK I’ll run for this time” or “maybe this is 4 miles, it felt like 4 miles.” When you’re on a bike or in the pool you keep much better track of miles or laps and the same should be said for running. The Garmin is a good lesson for me to learn my pace and my mileage.

Also want to send special wishes to Caitlin over at Healthy Tipping Point, she is on “The Today Show” this morning to promote her recent published book, “Operation Beautiful.”

Get a load of all the deets here: Women all over the world leave Operation Beautiful notes in public places — at work, at the gym, at the grocery store. We scribble down whatever comes to mind — “You are beautiful!” or “You are amazing just the way you are!” Maybe some people read them and just smile, but I bet some people are truly touched by the effort of a random stranger.

With all the crap in magazines and online today, we are constantly comparing ourselves to others. Damn, RuPaul was right! “”If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”

Zack Morris AND RuPaul mentions in the post, score!

Tonight I have a hawt date with my pal Moose, we’re heading to Sugarland!! Yea summer concerts.

In honor of Operation Beautiful, what’s one thing you love about your best friend or family? I love that my friends and family keep me grounded and show me the importance of making time for everyone.

  1. I love that my best friend is adventurous. I feel like she pushes me out of my comfort zone. She’s also the best for shopping, eating, listening…I wish she lived closer!

  2. I’m so jealous you’re going to Sugarland!! I know quite a few people heading there tonight.. should be a fun time.

I love that my friends and family are so supportive of me… and even on the days I feel like a total FAIL, they think whatever I am doing is the best thing in the world… sure feels nice to have someone believe in me, especially on the days that I don’t :)

  3. Thanks for the sweet comment on my site!

I LOVE your new purchase – looks crazy awesome.

Friends? They remind me that there is more to life than being sad or too much “in your head” – that’s for sure!

  4. I think it took me two months before I stopped fiddling with all of the display options on my 305, and finally settled on the ‘right’ combination for the 3 different screens. I’m big on training based on heart-rate, so my primary display shows 3 fields: heart rate on top, then pace and distance below. The second screen has a variety of pace displays: current, last lap (I have the auto-lap-every-mile feature turned on), and total average pace. I use that one a lot during group runs to make sure we’re all maintaining the agreed-upon pace. Finally, the third screen has time of day and time of run.

I have some women running friends who also have the 305, and found the original band not very comfortable for their smaller wrists. They switched to the velcro strap (which also makes switching to the bike-mount easier), and they reported that it’s much more comfortable for them now.

If you haven’t already, learn how to use the custom programming in the workouts/training section. This will really make your SmartCoach interval runs very easy to manage. Last year for my marathon I used a very similar SmartCoach plan to what you have right now. With the Garmin, I was able to run those intervals anywhere I wanted, and not just on a track. Much nicer. It will beep at you just before your next interval to get you going, then beep again when you can rest (and repeat, ad nauseam – so to speak). I found that while you can create custom workouts on the watch itself, it’s often easier to do it on the computer, and then download it to the watch. Just FYI.

Finally, about a year ago, after becoming totally addicted to knowing all this info on each run, I failed to fully charge the watch after a long run. Then I went out for a 17-miler, and it died at mile 12. Those last 5 miles were rather frustrating! My wife laughs at me for “needing” this technology to run, and then complains when my watch beeps every mile. Of course, 5 miles later, she’s asking me what our pace is, and how much farther we have to go…

    Have fun with it!

  5. I have a 405 and I love it!! I never was one to really care about my pace before getting it, and now it’s become a bit of a game. It’s changed the way I run and given me so much more freedom.

I love the support of my family and friends. Knowing that I can count on my sisters for anything is priceless

  6. I love how supportive my family and friends are about my choices. There are times when I’ve been unsure about my path, or have questioned what I want to do in life, and they are always there to listen and support my decisions. I actually just wrote a post about this sort of thing yesterday.

  7. Grrr my bf and I only saw the Nike Plus gear and settled on that. Now, I’m learning all about the Garmin, and it comes in pink (the 110)! I’m on my 3rd nike plus sportband since June 01, 2010! Oh well, gotta work with what I have I guess!

I love how even though my parents are in DC, and I’m in Athens, they still never feel like they’re far away and always drop everything to make sure I’m happy. i love how my bf inspires me and encourages me to be the best absolute Ashley possible!

  8. Oh man I am DYING for a garmin!

The boyfriend sent me a link for it on Amazon yesterday and was like “is this the one you want?”

I’m secretly praying that he decided to get it for me as a gift. How sweet would that be? Not keeping my fingers crossed since he’s busy paying for something else that is a little more sparkly and goes on a finger instead of the wrist…

  9. Yay for your new Garmin! My sisters are my best friends – can’t imagine my life without them and they’ve built me up and supported me everyday of my life. :)

  10. I can’t get over how big these bad boys are. I just don’t think I have the need or desire for a Garmin. I am a “less is more” type when it comes to technology on my runs.
